Mood Indigo **** (2013, Romain Duris, Audrey Tautou, Gad Elmaleh) – Movie Review

1

Romain Duris stars as wealthy Parisian inventor Colin, who lives an idyllic bachelor life with meals coming alive on the plate and table, and good food served by his trusty in-house chef, Nicolas (Omar Sly). His dream apartment boasts a tiny man in a mouse costume and a cocktail-making piano.

2

Then he meets his dream girlfriend Chloe (Audrey Tautou) and their fine romance includes travelling on a cloud bubble car and a wedding with a priest from a spaceship. All is perfect in this zany, whimsical fantasy world. But then tragedy strikes. And Colin is left trying to find a cure for Chloe after she’s diagnosed with a terminal illness caused by a water lily growing in her lungs. The cure seems to be to surround Chloe with a never-ending supply of fresh flowers.

Based on Boris Vian’s 1947 surreal novel Froth on the Daydream, co-writer/director Michel Gondry’s film is incredibly witty, stylish and clever. With Duris and Tautou giving such appealing performances, Amelie (2001) fans will just adore Mood Indigo. But, brilliant though it is, especially visually, even so I preferred Cédric Klapisch’s recent companion piece with the same two stars, Chinese Puzzle, but that’s just me.

The original title is L’écume des jours.

Gondry’s the director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004).
