More Scenes from a Gay Marriage *** (2014, Matt Riddlehoover, Jared Allman, Thashana McQuiston, Charlie David, Rett Terrell, Cliff Burr, Rodiney Santiago) – Classic Movie Review 13,341

Writer / producer / director Matt Riddlehoover’s 2014 romantic comedy film More Scenes from a Gay Marriage is an easy-going, likeable, funny sequel to the 2012 Scenes from a Gay Marriage, and picks up two years after the original left off.

Darren (Matt Riddlehoover) has allowed, even encouraged his ex, Leigh (Devin Walls) to make a film of his relationship with Joe (Jared Allman), an exaggerated version of how they met and fell in love, which has led to them busting up, as Joe feels disrespected and hurt, and Darren starts questioning their partnership. Darren sets off for a new life in LA, in a road trip with his bestie Luce (Thashana McQuiston) at the wheel. There’s no turning back. Or is there?

More Scenes from a Gay Marriage has a good nature and charm, and is delivered in nice, truthful performances. The fun, laughs and angst and tears are well balanced in a canny, entertaining script. The film follows the pattern of the original, with the Woody Allen vibe of vintage music and old-style credits, as well as Woody’s inconsequential attitude to story. It’s all about the characters, their relationships, the dramas, and the laughs. Please don’t look for a plot here, or any kind of conclusion. It’s meant to be a slice of gay life, and it is. There’s a little emotional kick at the end. The film ends with a cuddle.

Charlie David plays the movie version of Darren and Charlie David, Rett Terrell plays movie Joe, Cliff Burr plays Gregg, and Brazilian charmer Rodiney Santiago adds pecs appeal as Joe’s hired ‘Masseur’.

The needy actor Charlie David has moved in on Darren and Joe, and to get rid of him they suggest his casting as Darren in Leigh’s movie. This actual film starts with Luce and Gregg watching Leigh’s film. It’s all quite fun.

Matt Riddlehoover (born July 26, 1985)

Matt Riddlehoover is also known for the 2020 documentary My Darling Vivian, a biographical documentary about Vivian Liberto, the first wife of Johnny Cash.
