Director P J Hogan’s delicious 1997 romcom finally provided a huge hit again for Julia Roberts, turning in a very decent comedy performance as a devious journalist who decides she wants her best buddy (Dermot Mulroney) back when he plans to wed socialite Cameron Diaz.
Good though Roberts, Mulroney and Diaz are, it’s Rupert Everett who effortlessly steals the show in an incisive but polished turn as Julia’s English gay buddy who helps her do all the plotting.
This very funny 30s-style screwball comedy is stylishly directed by P J Hogan, the man who made Muriel’s Wedding, who this time scatters this one with Dionne Warwick hits to the most delightful of effects.
So, to enjoy the tunes and the movie, don’t walk on by!
Roberts and Mulroney reunite for August: Osage County in 2013.
