Director Bob Balaban’s 1993 teen black romantic comedy satisfyingly weird, well-meaning but shaky. It has a neat message and good performances, mainly by the old-time performers. The alternative title of Johnny Zombie tells the tale. Andrew Lowery stars as Johnny Dingle, who dies and comes back to his small town where the folk don’t react well to the fact that he’s now a zombie.
Johnny fancies Missy McCloud (Traci Lind), the most beautiful girl in school, but the road to true love is bumpy when he becomes a zombie after he’s killed in a holdup. His parents, Mr and Mrs Dingle (Edward Hermann, Mary Beth Hurt), are understandably not very happy. Nevertheless, now that he’s back from the dead, he can win Missy’s heart.
Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Chuck Bronski in an early performance. Danny Zorn, Jay O Sanders, Libby Villari, Matthew Fox, Paul Dooley, Austin Pendleton, Brooke Adams, Bob Dishy and Cloris Leachman are among also the cast.
Producer Sean S Cuningham also made Friday the 13th and House.
Life After Beth (2014) is another attempt at a similar zomromcom (zombie romantic comedy).
