My Sister Eileen **** (1955, Janet Leigh, Jack Lemmon, Betty Garrett, Bob Fosse, Kurt Kasznar, Horace McMahon, Dick York, Tommy Rall) – Classic Movie Review 7260

Wacky Betty Garrett and alluring Janet Leigh star as Ohio country girls Ruth and Eileen Sherwood in co-writer/ director Richard Quine’s 1955 musical remake of Rosalind Russell’s 1942 comedy My Sister Eileen about the adventures of two sisters in New York.

Jack Lemmon also stars as playboy publisher Bob Bake, to whom Ruth submits her story about her gorgeous sister Eileen, then assuming her identity to keep Bob fascinated.

It is a slight shame that the Columbia Pictures studio did not buy the rights to Wonderful Town, the Broadway musical version of the material, and film it, but instead commissioned Jule Styne and Leo Robin to write a new one.

But for the delightfully high-spirited performances, lovely look in cinematographer Charles Lawton Jr’s CinemaScope and Technicolor images, and Bob Fosse’s choreography, this is highly recommended.

It also stars Jack Lemmon, Bob Fosse, Kurt Kasznar, Horace McMahon, Dick York, and Tommy Rall.

My Sister Eileen also features Lucy Marlow, Barbara Brown, Henry Slate, Hal March, Alberto Morin, Queenie Smith, Richard Deacon and Ken Christy.

It is based on the stories by Ruth McKinney and the play by Joseph Fields and Jerome Chodorov.

Fondly remembering Jane Leigh on what would have been her 91st birthday, 6 July 2018. Which is her most famous film – Psycho or Touch of Evil?
