Director Neil LaBute’s 2000 comedy Nurse Betty stars Renée Zellweger, who is marvellous as the cheery but strange and dogged Kansas City waitress Betty, who goes off in search of her smug soap-opera idol Dr David Ravell (Greg Kinnear).
This highly effective, richly enjoyable oddball comedy drama is written by John C Richards and James Flamberg, based on by John C Richards’s story, with a generally dark tone that bursts into violence a couple of times.
It won one Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical for Renée Zellweger. It won the Best Screenplay award at the Cannes Film Festival 2000 for John C Richards and James Flamberg.
The real-life yarn goes haywire when Betty’s car salesman husband is found murdered and she becomes delusional from shock, and this is when she starts her obsession with the soap star.
Also in the cast are Morgan Freeman, Chris Rock, Aaron Eckhart, Tia Texada, Crispin Glover, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Allison Janney, Kathleen Wilhoite, Susan Barnes, Harriet Sansom Harris and Elizabeth Mitchell.
Nurse Betty is rated R for strong violence, pervasive language and a scene of sexuality.
