Director Sven J Matten’s likeable and enjoyable 2012 romantic drama film Off Shore stars André Würde as German economics graduate Andi, who has come to beautiful Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, Spain, to learn how to surf and to look for his estranged father Chris (Marko Pustisek), whom has has never met as Chris abandoned his mother and Andi years ago to live on the island and hasn’t been heard from since.
The local surfers welcome Andi, especially the bold and brazen surfing instructor Tina (Alexandra Sydow) who falls for him, while he prefers to start to make friends with the mysterious surfer hunk Pedro (Benjamin Martins).
But his attempt at a new-found relationship with his father (Marko Pustisek) is a strained affair, with Chris not exhibiting much care, concern or interest in his son, leading old wounds to start to reopen. And soon a long-kept family secret turns the apparently confident but inwardly sensitive Andi emotionally inside out. There’s a bit of a mystery as things are not quite what they seem in beautiful Fuerteventura, and that’s a bit awkward for Andi here.
The film is quite playful, sexy and entertaining, with amusing scenes, some sexual ambiguity and a bit of an emotional tug. It’s got something to say, not a big something, but a nice little something. Mostly it’s light and escapist, but there’s an inner sadness too. It starts with a bright, interesting idea, and is neatly written and nicely acted by the four principals. It is attractively filmed, on a gorgeous location, and is certainly a good advert for lovely Fuerteventura, and the beach/ surf life.
