Old School *** (2003, Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell, Luke Wilson) – Classic Movie Review 955

Co-writer/director Todd Phillips’s goofy, raunchy 2003 teen comedy stars the highly likeable Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn and Will Ferrell as wacky thirtysomething guys who try to recapture their lost youth by living it up in their own fraternity house at the local college.

The hugely amusing and talented popular comedy actors try their hardest and are funny. But, sadly, the crude and silly laughs are a bit thin on the ground in an often dumb and obvious script that just can’t go into farcical overdrive. However, Old School is good-natured enough and sometimes funny enough, and definitely has the popular touch, and it’s welcome as an obvious descendant of Animal House. The many fans of Phillips’s The Hangover (2009) need look no further for their entertainment pleasure.

Jeremy Piven enjoys a good role as Gordon ‘Cheese’ Pritchard, the new Dean of Students, who still holds a personal grudge against all three of the guys and wants to evict them. Ellen Pompeo, Juliette Lewis, Leah Remini, Perrey Reeves, Craig Kilborn, Elisha Cuthbert and Seann William Scott are also in the strong cast.

There’s a 15 certificate and strong language, sexual content and nudity.
