Peter Godfrey’s witty 1946 American comedy of manners film One More Tomorrow is based on Philip Barry’s play The Animal Kingdom, and stars Ann Sheridan, Dennis Morgan, Jack Carson, Alexis Smith, and Jane Wyman.
Socialist photographer Christie Sage (Sheridan)’s marriage to Tom Collier (Morgan), who is idle, rich and conservative, comes under pressure when he buys out the worthy publication she works on. Meanwhile, Cecilia Henry (Smith) wants to marry Morgan for his wealth, but soon he is falling for Sheridan.
One More Tomorrow is an adaptation of Philip Barry’s 1932 play The Animal Kingdom but with some extra topical themes such as World War Two war profiteering thrown in for good measure. Some of the meaning behind the content has been lost over the years, but the acting is creditable and the dialogue sparkles and crackles with wit.
The screenplay is written by Charles Hoffman and Catherine Turney, with additional dialogue by Julius J Epstein and Philip G Epstein.
It is a remake of the 1932 film The Animal Kingdom with Leslie Howard, Ann Harding, and Myrna Loy.
It was released by Warner Bros on 1 June 1946, earning $3,017,000 globally against a budget of $869,000.
Also in the cast are Reginald Gardiner, John Loder, Marjorie Gateson, Thurston Hall, John Abbott, Marjorie Hoshelle, Sig Arno, Frank Coghlan Jr, Fred Essler, Bess Flowers, Robert Hutton, Hal K Dawson, Paul Panzer, Juanita Stark, Lottie Williams, Joan Winfield, Henri deSoto, Mary Field, Danny Jackson, Frances Morris, Gertrude Carr, Billy Benedict, and Lynn Baggett.
It was to have starred Olivia de Havilland, but she refused to appear in the film claiming overwork, and was suspended by Warner Bros. She filed a lawsuit that resulted in a landmark ruling known as the De Havilland Law, which prevents a court from enforcing specific performance of an exclusive personal services contract.
Wings for the Eagle (1942) is the first of three screen pairings of Ann Sheridan and Dennis Morgan, followed by Shine On, Harvest Moon (1944) and One More Tomorrow (1946).
The cast are Ann Sheridan as Christie Sage, Dennis Morgan as Tom Collier III, Jack Carson as Pat Regan, Alexis Smith as Cecelia Henry, Jane Wyman as Frankie Connors, Reginald Gardiner as Jim Aloysius Fisk, John Loder as Owen Arthur, Marjorie Gateson as Aunt Edna Collier. Thurston Hall as Thomas Rufus Collier II, John Abbott as Joseph Baronova, Marjorie Hoshelle as Illa Baronova, Sig Arno as Poppa Diaduska, Frank Coghlan Jr, Fred Essler, Bess Flowers, Robert Hutton, Hal K Dawson, Paul Panzer, Juanita Stark, Lottie Williams, Joan Winfield, Henri deSoto, Mary Field, Danny Jackson, Frances Morris, Gertrude Carr, Billy Benedict, and Lynn Baggett.
