One Mysterious Night *** (1944, Chester Morris, Janis Carter, William Wright) – Classic Movie Review 9628

The 1944 crime mystery thriller One Mysterious Night finds that Chester Morris is back as Boston Blackie in this fast-paced, top-of-the-range Columbia Pictures series episode, directed by cult Western name, Budd Boetticher, then billed as Oscar Boetticher Jr.

Richard Lane plays Inspector Farrady, who talks the sleuth into helping him to find a fabulous precious diamond, the Blue Star of the Nile, which has been stolen from a war relief exhibit. It also stars Janis Carter as Dorothy Anderson, William Wright as Paul Martens, and George E Stone as The Runt.

It is the seventh of the 14 Boston Blackie films starring Chester Morris released by Columbia Pictures between 1941 and 1949. It is Boetticher’s first credited film as director.

Paul Yawitz’s screenplay is based on Jack Boyle’s Boston Blackie character.

Also in the cast are Robert B Williams, Robert E Scott, Joseph Crehan, Dorothy Malone, John Tyrrell, Lyle Latell, George Magrill, George McKay and Ben Taggart,

One Mysterious Night is directed by Budd Boetticher, runs 61 minutes, is made and released by Columbia Pictures, is written by Paul Yawitz, based on Jack Boyle’s character, is shot in black and white by L William O’Connell, is produced by Ted Richmond, is scored by Paul Sawtell and is designed by Lionel Banks.
