Only You **** (2018, Josh O’Connor, Laia Costa) – Movie Review

Rising British star Josh O’Connor from God’s Own Country (2017) stars with Spanish actress Laia Costa in English writer-director Harry Wootliff’s poignant, touching bitter-sweet 2018 British romantic drama film Only You.

They play Jake and Elena, who meet by chance on New Year’s Eve, sharing a taxi and then starting a passionate, then loving relationship.

O’Connor and Costa make us desperate for the love story to have a happy ending, but will it, as life inevitably gets in the way?

Wootliff’s screenplay feels as impactful and truthful as it is emotional, and Only You is perfectly acted by the star duo, with strong, convincing dialogue for them to chew on.

It premieres at the BFI London Film Festival on 19 October 2018, with its belated UK release by Curzon Artificial Eye on 12 July 2019.

The cumulative Worldwide Gross was reported as $88,974. If so, did anyone actually see this movie outside the London, Göteborg, Dinard and Newport Beach Film Festivals? With its cinema release, eventually the box office was $161,285.

It is Wootliff’s debut feature after a BAFTA Film Award nominated Short Film Nits (2004).

The score is by Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch.

The cast are Laia Costa as Elena Aldana, Josh O’Connor as Jake, Peter Wight as Andrew, Lisa McGrillis as Carly, Stuart Martin as Shane, Isabelle Barth as Rose, and Orion Lee as Eddie.

It was shot in 25 days in Finnieston, Glasgow.

It runs 119 minutes.

Josh O’Connor won a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award for playing a young Charles III in the Netflix drama series The Crown (2019–2020).

Wootliff’s second feature film True Things (2021) starring Ruth Wilson and Tom Burke, had its World Premiere at Venice.
