‘Mr Hardy was making big preparations to get married – Mr Laurel was taking a bath too.‘ Director James W Horne’s 1931 Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy comedy Our Wife is a consistently funny and inventive two-reeler featurette from their best period.
Father of the Bride James Finlayson’s plump daughter Dulcy (Babe London) is a perfect match for Hardy, who elopes with Laurel’s help — or rather hindrance. All’s finally well, except that cross-eyed justice of the peace Ben Turpin marries Ollie’s girl to Stan.
The highly amusing, well-handled extended sequence packing three people and the elopement getaway luggage into a midget car predates similar scenes in Marx Brothers movies.
Also in the cast are Blanche Payson as Wife of Justice of the Peace and Charley Rogers as Finlayson’s Butler.
Our Wife is directed by James W Horne, runs 20 minutes, is made by Hal Roach Studios, is released by MGM, is written by H M Walker, is shot in black and white by Art Lloyd and Jack Stevens, is produced by Hal Roach and is scored by Leroy Shield and Marvin Hatley.
