Director Arthur Hiller’s 1987 Outrageous Fortune is a just a shade better than so-so comedy vehicle for two of the most talented comediennes of the 80s – Shelley Long and Bette Midler.
The spy plot, the jokes and Hiller’s direction have come from the second-hand stall, but Midler and Long are delighful as actresses Sandy and Lauren, who unwittingly have both been carrying on with the same man, Michael (Peter Coyote), who is involved in a KGB plot against the US government. When he disappears, they go out and search for him.
Long does her upper-class number from her TV show Cheers and Midler does her raucous turn, and both are winning acts.
The men all play second fiddle, Peter Coyote, Robert Prosky, John Schuck, George Carlin, Anthony Heald, Robert Pastorelli, John DiSanti, Gary Morgan and Christopher McDonald.
It is written by Leslie Dixon.
