Director Ho Kim’s handsome Chinese 2001 drama stars Luo Yan, who is touching as Madame Wu Ailian, a 40-year-old Chinese wife who falls for an American priest, Father Andre (played by Willem Dafoe), in 1938, when he becomes the tutor of her 18-year-old son Fengmo (John Cho).
This plush, enjoyable, and affecting period romance is spiced up with a touch of explicit love-making.
It is produced and written by the star herself and based on a novel by Pearl S Buck.
