Artur Volpi stars in the appealing Brazilian feel-good romantic comedy film Perfect Endings as 32-year old São Paulo filmmaker João, who ends his 10-year relationship with Hugo (Sidney Santiago) but decides to stay best friends. As they start dating other people again, a whirlwind of emotions arises, and João finds that he can’t control reality like the great movie script he’s trying to write.

João finds himself at a bit of a loss, challenged in both his personal and professional life, but still optimistic and positive. While trying to break into the uncaring film industry, he ends up directing amateur erotic films, and meanwhile embarks on an up-to-date dating journey with the support of a couple of loyal oddball friends.

The charming hero is pretty much the whole show, but, still, the light-weight, light-hearted show is always amusing and entertaining, sometimes very funny, sometimes very touching. There are no big conflicts, home truths, surprises or revelations, but small can be quite beautiful. Like the hero, the film is smart and cool and sexy – and fun, quite exciting in its laid-back relaxed kind of way. João may have his problems, but they don’t amount to a hill of beans, and luckily he doesn’t have much to complain about.

The original title is 13 Sentimentos (13 feelings), which gets lost in translation.

Perfect Endings comes from the director of The Way he Looks, winner of the Teddy Award (Berlinale) – Best Feature Film 2014.
