Seth Rogen and James Franco are hilarious as a roly-poly process server and slacker pothead called Dale Denton and his amiable, stoned-out marijuana dealer Saul Silver, who sells him a rare new strain of weed called Pineapple Express.
They have to go on the run for their lives from hitmen and a corrupt cop after Rogen’s Dale character witnesses a murder. Like an idiot, Dale has panicked and dumped his roach of Pineapple Express at the scene, but the weed is so rare that his worst fears become a reality when it can be traced back to him.
Taken at breathless speed, director David Gordon Green’s 2008 smash hit is an awesome stoner comedy, as incredibly juvenile as it is hysterically funny. Odd couple Rogen and Franco are a brilliant comedy duo – they’re the Laurel and Hardy of stoner comedy.
There are also genuinely funny support performances from Danny McBride as Red, Gary Cole as Ted Jones and Rosie Perez as cop Carol. And the hilarious script (co-written by Rogen, with Evan Goldberg) is jam-packed with great big laughs and lots of hysterically daft action.
If you liked the original Anchorman and Knocked Up, and who didn’t? – you’ll love this.
RIP Connie Sawyer, Hollywood’s oldest working actress, who passed away at 105 on 22 January 2018. She plays James Franco’s godmother in Pineapple Express, and also appeared in A Hole in the Head, Dumb and Dumber (1994), When Harry Met Sally… (1989) and Lovesick (2014),
