Director Alan Myerson’s painful 1988 comedy Police Academy 5: Assignment: Miami Beach again stars George Gaynes as Commandant Eric Lassard, who goes to Miami to pick up an award (not an Academy Award!) from the Mayor of Miami (James Hampton), and his arch-enemy Captain Harris (G W Bailey) tries to put his spoke in the wheel.
The wide-of-the-mark slapstick comedy is quite numbingly bad, lacking equally in humour, charm and originality.
Both the script and performances are grossly over-confident and under-achieved, but none the less the series’ popularity continued into sixth and seventh episodes : Police Academy 6: City Under Siege and Police Academy 7: Mission to Moscow.
Police Academy 5: Assignment: Miami Beach is written by Stephen J Curwick, based on the characters created by Neal Israel and Pat Proft.
Alas there is no Steve Guttenberg, who quit his role as Mahoney in the series after Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol (1987).
Also in the cast are Matt McCoy, Bubba Smith, David Graf, Janet Jones, René Auberjonois, Leslie Easterbrook, Michael Winslow, Marion Ramsey, George R Robertson, Tab Thacker, Archie Hahn, Lance Kinsey, Laverne Hooks and Dan Fitzgerald.
The team members are Nick Lassard (Matt McCoy), Moses Hightower (Bubba Smith), Eugene Tackleberry (David Graf), Larvell Jones (Michael Winslow), Debbie Callahan (Leslie Easterbrook), and Laverne Hooks (Marion Ramsey).
