Director Peter Bonerz’s 1989 Police Academy 6: City Under Siege is a formulaic rerun of previous episodes of a series that has long since lost its ability to charm or raise its share of laughs. It follows Police Academy 5: Assignment: Miami Beach (1988).
The notorious Wilson Heights Gang has unleashed a crime wave and, when Captain Harris (G W Bailey) fails to stop them pulling another heist, the mayor is up in arms because property values have been badly affected.
So Commandant Eric Lassard (George Gaynes)’s bungling bobby cadets are drafted in to bring them to justice.
Also in the cast are Bubba Smith, David Graf, Michael Winslow, Leslie Easterbrook, Marion Ramsey, Lance Kinsey, Matt McCoy, Bruce Mahler, Kenneth Mars, Gerrit Graham, George R Robertson, Brian Seeman, Darwyn Swalve, Billie Bird and Fifties star Roberta Haynes in her last film as Bus Passenger.
The team members are Nick Lassard (Matt McCoy), Moses Hightower (Bubba Smith), Eugene Tackleberry (David Graf), Larvell Jones (Michael Winslow), Debbie Callahan (Leslie Easterbrook), Laverne Hooks (Marion Ramsey), and Douglas Fackler (Bruce Mahler).
Police Academy 6: City Under Siege is directed by Peter Bonerz, runs 83 minutes , is made by Ladd Company, distributed by Warner, written by Stephen J Curwick, shot by Charles Rosher Jr, produced by Paul Maslansky, scored by Robert Folk and designed by Tho E Azzari.
Police Academy 7: Mission to Moscow followed in 1994, ending the series.
In September 2018, original series star Steve Guttenberg tweeted: ‘The next Police Academy is coming, no details yet.’
RIP Roberta Haynes (1929–2019), known for her work on Return to Paradise, The Nebraskan, Point Blank (1967) and Gun Fury (1953).
