Powwow Highway (1988) is the story of two very different Cheyenne Indians, and their journey into friendship and personal discovery.
Director Jonathan Wacks’s 1988 British road movie film Powwow Highway comes from HandMade Films productions, is based on a novel by David Seals, and stars A Martinez and Gary Farmer.
Powwow Highway is the story of two Cheyenne Indians who couldn’t be more different, and their journey into friendship and personal discovery. Handsome, charismatic political activist A Martinez and massive, easy-going loner Gary Farmer are thrown together for a week in a journey against time across the plains of America in a beat-up ‘64 Buick.
This hippy material makes for an offbeat movie, but, after a slow start, it takes a strong hold and there is a very satisfying climax. Director Wacks relies heavily on the stars’ charm, and Farmer especially turns up trumps with a graceful engaging performance.
Also in the cast are Joanelle Nadine Romero, Geoff Rivas, Roscoe Born, Wayne Waterman, Margo Kane, Amanda Wyss, Sam Vlanos, Graham Greene, and Wes Studi in his film debut.
Gary Farmer (born June 12, 1953) is a Canadian actor and musician.
Adolfo Martínez (born September 27, 1948) is an American actor and singer with roles in The Cowboys (1972), Powwow Highway (1989) and Curse of Chucky (2013).
