Amber Midthunder stars in the 2022 American science fiction film Prey as fierce Comanche warrior Naru, who sets out to protect her people when a highly evolved alien predator threatens them on the Northern Great Plains in 1719.
A prequel to the previous four films in the Predator franchise series, it is directed by Dan Trachtenberg and written by Patrick Aison. It stars Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Dane DiLiegro, Michelle Thrush, Stormee Kipp, Julian Black Antelope, and Bennett Taylor.
Prey (2022) is a painstaking, visually stylish, good-looking item, with some tense, exciting action thriller sequences, and a lusty, scary atmosphere, plus a winning central performance. But it is eventually somehow totally disposable and unmemorable, just yet another Predator follow-up film. Despite all the Herculean efforts to make it different and original, it still seems like more of the same old stuff, and it comes nowhere near the original Predator for horror scares and thrills.
Was I expecting too much? Hoping for too much? Could be. I don’t rate it too highly, but it is okay, entirely watchable, entertaining and enjoyable even, though you probably wouldn’t want to see it again and you can watch Predator (1987) and Predator 2 (1990) every six months maybe. There is not much dialogue and not much character development, or compelling driving plotlines, but then it is Predator and they aren’t exactly relevant. It ends up like a posh and slightly pretentious historical action role-playing video game, and, as such, it is absolutely fine.
It ought to have been in cinemas but it ended up streaming. It was released by 20th Century Studios as a Hulu original film on August 5 2022, making it eligible for Primetime Emmy Awards, It was nominated for six, winning one Emmy for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special.
Filming took place around Calgary in the Canadian province of Alberta in summer 2021, mostly shot in English, with some sequences in Comanche and French. The cast reprised their roles in a full Comanche language dub of the film, the first feature to do so.
