Director Enzo Barboni’s 1987 Renegade stars Terence Hill as a drifter called Renegade Luke who makes his way across America by selling his faithful steed Joe, which then promptly trots back to him. But violence erupts when an imprisoned convict buddy, Moose (Norman Bowler), gets Hill to take charge of his young son (real adopted son Ross Hill) and his ranch. Luke and Matt both befriend Quakers and take on the nasty villain Lawson (Robert Vaughn).
This amusingly laid-back Italian modern Western has plenty of entertainment value, with much slapstick comedy and enough tension and excitement at the action climaxes.
In a change for the better, Hill (proper name Mario Girotti) teams up with his real son Ross Hill and Robert Vaughn instead of his usual soppy pardner Bud Spencer. It is shot on location in Arizona, USA.
Tragically Ross Hill died in a road accident on January 15, 1990 in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, aged 16.
Also in the cast are Donald Hodson, Beatrice Palme, Lisa Ann Rubin, Luisa Maneri, Valeria Sabel and Cole S McKay.
Renegade is directed by Enzo Barboni [E B Clucher], runs 92 minutes, is made by Paloma Films, is released by Vestron Video International (1988) (UK) (VHS), is written by Marco Barboni [Mark Barboni] (story and screenplay), shot by Alfio Contini, produced by Lucio Bompani, scored by Mauro Paoluzzi and designed by Carlo Simi.
It was released in Italy on 27 November 1987 as Renegade, un osso troppo duro, in the UK as Renegade and the US as They Call Me Renegade.
