Director Steven Quale’s 2017 Renegades is good old-style action adventure, surprisingly enjoyable, and greatly enlivened with J K Simmons’s sarcastic turn as the Admiral, the US Navy SEALs boss. It is a real Boys’ Own adventure and I’d have loved it when I was about 15.
In the screenplay by writers Richard Wenk and Luc Besson, a team of Navy SEALs discovers Nazi underwater treasure down in a Bosnian lake and have to release it.
A satisfyingly posh production, it looks lavish and costly, with the wartime shots and the underwater filming impressive. Above all, there is plenty of robust and entertaining action, the whole point of the movie. It was filmed in Karlovac, Croatia, and Simmons and Joshua Henry are the only two American actors in the movie. Sylvia Hoeks, is a particularly feisty heroine.
