Director Jerry London’s 1988 Rent-a-Cop stars Burt Reynolds, Liza Minnelli and Robby Benson, who recklessly reconvene after the disaster of the 1975 Lucky Lady and have no more luck this time in a lifeless action crime comedy thriller.
Reynolds gives a half-hearted turn as a Chicago cop, rightly suspended from the force when there is a bloodbath during his hotel drugs raid. Minnelli comes off worst as a prostitute who joins him to hunt the stereotypical villain (James Remar).
The typecast stars try hard and are always amiable, and there is an eye-catching roster of character players (Richard Masur, Dionne Warwick, Bernie Casey, Michael Rooker, John Stanton, John P Ryan) to divert attention from the plot. But this boring and predictable film just won’t do.
It is written by Dennis Shryack and Michael Blodgett.
