Director Guido Malatesta’s 1964 period action adventure drama Revolt of the Barbarians [La Rivolta dei Barbari] is a very moderate Italian sword and sandal epic, in which a Roman consul goes to Gaul to investigate the theft of gold shipments and he finds himself having to foil the tribe of barbarians who are revolting and are stealing the gold, and are led by the governor of Gaul.
Revolt of the Barbarians stars Sixties Italian epic star of Swiss-French dual nationality Roland Carey, who played Jason in The Giants of Thessaly (1960), as Darius. Also in the cast are Maria Grazia Spina as Lydia, Mario Feliciani, Gabriele Antonini, Andrea Aureli, Susan Sullivan, Gaetano Scala, Franco Beltramme and Gilberto Galimberti.
It is watchable, and passably entertaining, but the bad acting, the grainy Eastmancolor cinematography, the slack English language dubbing and the liberal use of obvious stock footage count against it.
