Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burt Young and Burgess Meredith team up with original 1976 Rocky director John G Avildsen for the 1990 boxing movie sequel Rocky V, the final episode of the original run of the franchise.
Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), now broke and retired from the ring after the damage done to him by the Russian boxer Ivan Drago, returns to Philadelphia to train a raw young talent for the big fight, up-and-coming fighter Tommy Gunn (Tommy Morrison).
Rocky V is familiar and predictable stuff, but then, in a fourth sequel, that is surely the point. Still, on the plus side, Stallone’s son Sage Stallone delivers a little knockout performance as Rocky’s jealous son Rocky Balboa Jr and there is a cliffhanger ending.
Rocky Balboa followed in 2006, Rocky VI in all but name. Creed and Creed II follow.
