Ideally paired Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are hilarious as Romy White and Michele Weinberger who tell porkies and land in heaps of difficulty at their 10-year high school reunion in director David Mirkin’s zesty, funny 1997 comedy. The two 28-year-old women appear not to have achieved much success in life and decide to invent fake careers to impress their former classmates.
It motors on the appealing performances, amusing characters, inventive, funny situations and the witty screenplay by Robin Schiff, based on his play Ladies Room, which also featured Kudrow.
It should have been the big hit it deserved to be, though it did open at number 2 at the North American box office, making $7.4million in its opening weekend behind Volcano. It went on to take $29million in the US. Janeane Garofalo, Camryn Manheim and Alan Cumming also star.
Kudrow received a degree in biology from Vassar College and Sorvino a degree in Asian studies from Harvard University, so they nicknamed each other ‘Smart’ and ‘Smarter’.
