Director James Ivory’s 1972 allegory fantasy comedy drama Savages is based on his own story idea, in which a wandering tribe discovers an empty mansion, but their members change when they live in it and put on the 1920s clothes they find there.
Merchant-Ivory’s inauspicious American debut is an arty, obvious metaphorical film that has had few admirers or adherents.
The first half is a black and white silent movie with titles.
The cast are Louis J Stadlen, Anne Francine, Thayer David, Salome Jens, Neil Fitzgerald, Susan Blakely, Russ Thacker, Margaret Brewster, Eva Saleh, Ultra Violet, Kathleen Widdoes, Sam Waterston and Martin Kove.
Savages is directed by James Ivory, runs 106 minutes, is made by Merchant Ivory Productions is released by Angelika Films (1972) (US), is written by George Swift Trow and Michael O’Donoghue, is shot by Walter Lassally, is produced by Ismail Merchant and Joseph Saleh, and is scored by Joe Raposo.
