Scary Movie 3 (2003, Anna Faris, Regina Hall) – Classic Movie Review 1181

David Zucker from the Airplane! and Naked Gun series takes over the Scary Movie horror movie spoof franchise from Keenen Ivory Wayans and the other two Wayans Bros in 2003, and injects the fun back into it.

There are laugh-out-loud parodies of Signs, The Matrix and The Ring and (again) The Sixth Sense (and, just for good measure or lack of anything else to spoof, 8 Mile).

Zucker gets right into the spirit of things with a tacky, non-PC, but funny, inventive and hugely popular comedy to match the first one. Charlie Sheen plays the Mel Gibson farmer character in the Signs parody and a very welcome Leslie Nielsen is the US President tackling the arrival of aliens. Both of the performers are funny. Anna Faris and Regina Hall are the survivors from Scary Movie 2, as Cindy Campbell and Brenda Meeks.

It’s rude, crude and decidedly patchy, but undeniably hilarious in places. Craig Mazin and Pat Proft are the writers to praise or blame for the jokes. It was a box-office smash, grossing $220million worldwide.

Scary Movie 4 followed in 2006 and Scary Movie 5 in 2013.
