‘Love is in the air ducts.’
The appealing 2012 romantic comedy film Scenes from a Gay Marriage is written and directed by Matt Riddlehoover, who also stars as a recently single gay man who finds pleasure and comfort in listening to the drama of his upstairs neighbours’ relationship transmitted through his apartment building’s air ducts but then suspects one of them is cheating.
Scenes from a Gay Marriage is an easy-going, good natured and sweetly amusing 2012 romantic comedy film, with a Woody Allen vibe (vintage music and Woody-style credits). It is a whole lot nicer and better than expected. It doesn’t push too hard, just enough. Film-maker Matt Riddlehoover is rather good as the left-alone hero Darren. very credible, quite appealing. You don’t think you’re going to like him at first, but he quickly swings you over. Thashana McQuiston is funny as hero’s sassy bestie Luce and Jared Allman is a pleasant as apartment handyman Jo, who has a thing for Darren.
It is brightly shot by cinematographer Shane Bartlett and crisply edited by Riddlehoover.
It is shot in Nashville, Tennessee, and was successful enough for a sequel, More Scenes from a Gay Marriage (2014).
The cast are Matt Riddlehoover as Darren, Carson Nicely as Neighbour, Cliff Burr as Greg, Thashana McQuiston as Luce, Jared Allman as Joe, Malachi Taylor as Neighbor’s Boyfriend, Devin Walls as Leigh Peters, Domiziano Arcangeli as Aldo, Nathan McKellips as Neighbor’s Ex, and J R Robles as Walt DePore.
Release date: October 2012 (Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival).
Matt Riddlehoover is also known for the 2020 documentary My Darling Vivian, a biographical documentary about Vivian Liberto, the first wife of Johnny Cash.
