The likeable and attractive 2021 British autobiographical coming-of-age comedy drama film Scott and Sid is written, produced and directed by Scott Elliott and Sid Sadowskyj. Richard Mason and Tom Blyth star as Scott and Sid, who try to fulfil a list of ambitions made when they were 15, with the goal to make a film before they are 30. And this, of course, is it. The two men are outsiders and dreamchasers, but are able to swing people onto their side and fulfil their dream, and meanwhile share a fine bromance.
Two extremely appealing and lively performances by Richard Mason and Tom Blyth, sharing infectious chemistry, and an equally infectious upbeat, positive mood lead the way to success for Scott Elliott and Sid Sadowskyj. The film is enormously good hearted and entertaining. It is very easy to fall hook, line and sinker for it. Charlotte Milchard supports loyally in an ungrateful role as Sid’s sad mum, who has gone to alcoholic pieces after a bereavement.
Mason and Blyth do well to convince as schoolboys, but perhaps come more into their own later as young 20something entrepreneurs. The writers go for a lot of simple wisdom, encouraging people to get moving and chase their dreams, and it is very easy to fall for that too. The film feels fresh and it is quite stylishly made and edited, and, above all, it is amusing, often very funny. Those looking for an entertaining mood lifter and a spirit raiser needn’t bother to look any farther.
The title is a bit of a liability. Why didn’t they stick with the original Dreamchaser?
Tom Blyth (born 2 February 1995) stars with Russell Tovey in Plainclothes, an independent film based on true events from writer-director Carmen Emmi. Blyth plays an undercover cop in the 1990s who works to entrap and apprehend gay men until he finds himself drawn to one of his targets (Tovey).
