Another entertainingly bad wig, another entertainingly bad movie from Nicolas Cage, teaming up with Hellboy’s Ron Perlman as 14th-century knights.
Behmen (Cage) and Felson (Perlman) are ordered on a mission to escort a girl (Claire Foy) accused of being witch to a remote monastery for trial. Monks believe that her powers could be the source of the black plague that is gripping the land.
Director Dominic Sena’s impressive-looking, atmospheric and menacing 2011 action fantasy adventure starts promisingly enough. But then it starts to lose it in mid-section as the narrative drifts and stops being gripping. And finally it falls apart entirely towards the end with a daft effects-led slam-bang conclusion.
As it could so easily have been a lot better, you might end up feeling a bit let down. But it has its moments and is not by any means a total waste of time.
Also in the cast are Stephen Campbell Moore as Debelzaq, Ulrich Thomsen as Eckhart, Robert Sheehan as Kay and Christopher Lee as Cardinal D’Ambroise.
