Producer/ director/ star Buster Keaton’s clever and hilarious, classic silent comedy showcases a stressed-out Buster as nearly bankrupt financial broker Jimmie Shannon, who has to find himself a spouse within a few hours to receive a $7 million inheritance in his grandfather’s will.
Written by Clyde Bruckman, Jean C Havez and Joseph A Mitchell, and based on the play by David Belasco and Roi Cooper Megrue, it is full of great action gags, nail-biting chase sequences and big belly laughs. Above all, as performer, Keaton is working at near his finest form.
Also in the cast are T Roy Barnes as Jimmie’s partner Billy Meekin, Ruth Dwyer, Snitz Edwards, Frankie Raymond, Erwin Connelly, Jules Cowles, Constance Talmadge and Jean Arthur.
It is black and white, but the opening sequence is in two-strip Technicolor.
It was remade as The Bachelor in 1999 with Chris O’Donnell and Renée Zellweger.
