Director Lewis Gilbert’s 1976 romance Seven Nights in Japan stars Michael York as a British prince called George who goes ashore in Tokyo and savours love with a Japanese tour guide (Hidemi Aoki).
Gilbert’s reworking of Roman Holiday is a fun trip, and Henri Decaë’s travelogue photography looks pretty, but a daft assassination plot and a lack of humour make a week seem like a fortnight.
Christopher Wood’s tale appeared cheeky and topical at the time, as it was based on press rumours of a 70s royal romance featuring the young Prince Charles in his pre-Princess Diana days.
Also in the cast are James Villiers, Peter Jones, Charles Gray and Ann Lennberg.
