Director John Goldschmidt’s 1985 comedy She’ll Be Wearing Pink Pyjamas is based on the novel by Eva Hardy and stars Julie Walters, who gives one of her most engaging performances as one of the eight desperate women testing themselves on a survival challenge course at one of Britain’s toughest survival schools in the English Lake District.

Eva Hardy’s screenplay and story build in some useful sharp edges to stave off sentimentality and whimsy, in this delightfully quirky, funny women’s outward-bound course comedy. Plus there is some excellent dialogue in her strong script and there are very nice performances from actresses like Jane Wood and Pauline Yates, who usually get too little to do.

The sometimes amusing, sometimes uncomfortable script lays the groundwork for a funny and penetrating look at female rivalries and relationships, and provides a good showcase for the appealing Walters, who tries mighty hard as the group’s headstrong leader.

Also in the cast are Gail Bates, Jane Evers, Janet Henfrey, Paula Jacobs, Bill Lund, Penelope Nice, Maureen O’Brien and Alyson Spiro.

Walters is said to have demanded the rest of the crew got all their kit off to film the group naked shower sequence.

It was filmed at Eskdale, Cumbria, England.
