Writer-director Alain Jessua’s classy, provocative allegorical 1973 French horror suspense thriller Shock Treatment [Traitement de Choc] is realised in assured performances by Alain Delon and Annie Girardot, and intelligent writing and suspenseful direction from Jessua.
In the story, Hélène Masson (Girardot) visits Docteur Devilers (Delon)’s rejuvenation clinic that has discovered a formula to prevent aging, but she gets more than she bargained for as it involves the harvesting of young men’s blood and body parts.
There are adult themes and the provocative alternative English title Doctor in the Nude gives a hint of what’s in store as some well-known French actors get completely naked.
Also in the cast are Robert Hirsch, Michel Duchaussoy, Jean-François Calvé and Guy Saint-Jean.
Shock Treatment [Traitement de Choc] [Doctor in the Nude] is directed by Alain Jessua, runs 97 minutes, is made by A J Films, Lira Films, Belstar Productions, Medusa Distribuzione and Imperia, is released by Medusa Distribuzione (1973) (Italy) and New Line Cinema (1974) (US), is written by Alain Jessua (scenario) and Roger Curel (co-adaptation), is shot in Eastmancolor by Jacques Robin, is produced by Raymond Danon and Jacques Dorfmann, is scored by Alain Jessua and René Koering, and is designed by Geo Hury, Yannis Kokkos and Constantin Mejinsky.
