Director Pietro Francisci’s 1960 Italian historical drama film Siege of Syracuse [L’Assedio di Siracusa] stars Rossano Brazzi, Tina Louise, Sylva Koscina, Enrico Maria Salerno, and Gino Cervi. It focuses on the Roman Siege of Syracuse that took place between 213 and 212 BC during the Second Punic War with Carthage.
Rossano Brazzi stars as Archimedes who loses his principles and falls in love with Diana (Tina Louise) even though he is engaged to the king of Syracuse’s daughter. But Diana is abducted by her wicked step-brother Giorgio (Enrico Maria Salerno) and Archimedes weds Clio (Sylva Koscina).
Siege of Syracuse is preposterous though colourful dubbed Italian historical adventure nonsense, not noted for its historical accuracy, but it is briskly handled, and enlivened with slickly professional performances by Brazzi, Louise and Koscina.
Also in the cast are Alberto Farnese, Luciano Marin, Alfredo Varelli.
