Writer-director David O Russell’s waywardly brilliant romantic comedy drama stars Bradley Cooper as former teacher Pat Solitano who comes out of a mental institution and moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Excellent though Cooper is here, he is upstaged by Lawrence as mysterious problem girl Tiffany, whom Pat meets.
The movie is a personal triumph for Jennifer Lawrence, who of course won the 2013 Best Actress Oscar for her performance here in Russell’s for Silver Linings Playbook and also has other nominations for Winter’s Bone (2010) American Hustle (2013) and Joy (2015).
Russell’s screenplay is based on Matthew Quick’s novel.
For Joy, Jennifer Lawrence won the 2016 Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy – but this movie is no musical or comedy. Strange that! The movie was nominated too – as Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. She is also Oscar nominated for Best Performance by an Actress.
