Simply Irresistible *** (1999, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Sean Patrick Flanery, Patricia Clarkson) – Classic Movie Review 4172

Sarah Michelle Gellar is simply irresistible in director Mark Tarlov’s 1999 surprise comedy flop, a sweet, positive, life-affirming charmer, very nicely written by Judith Roberts, Tarlov’s wife. It is delicate and whismical, and highly romantic, this fantasy comedy drama.

Sean Patrick Flanery also stars as department store boss Tom Bartlett, who can’t help falling for young restaurant owner Amanda Shelton (Gellar), whom he thinks has magic powers after she inherits the restaurant. Alas poor Amanda is terrible chef but a magical crab works wonders for her culinary skills, leading her in the direction of Tom, the man of her dreams.

Also in the appealing cast are Patricia Clarkson, Dylan Baker, Larry Gilliard Jr, Christopher Durang, Betty Buckley, Amanda Peet, Olek Krupa. Alex Draper, Drew Nieporent, Anthony Ruivivar, Phyllis Somerville, Steven Skybell and Andrew McFarlane.
