Directors Frank Miller, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s neo noir crime thriller Sin City (2005) is eye-poppingly imaginative and just plain brilliant. A graphic novel sprung to vivid life on the screen, it needs careful handling as it is an exhilarating, take-no-prisoners trip to the dark side.
There is no screen writing credit but it is based on the graphic novels by Frank Miller, in which three people are caught up in violent corruption in the dark town of Basin City.
Rutger Hauer is among the many stars, as Cardinal Roark. RIP Rutger Hauer (1944–2019).
Also in the cast are Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Benicio Del Toro, Michael Clarke Duncan, Tommy Flanagan, Carla Gugino, Josh Hartnett and Rick Gomez.
Sin City runs (unrated, recut).
It is rated R for sustained strong stylized violence, nudity and sexual content, including dialogue.
The effects and scoring were all done in Rodriguez’s studio, across the street from his house.
It is made by Dimension Films and Troublemaker Studios, and produced by Bob Weinstein (executive producer) and Harvey Weinstein (executive producer) and Elizabeth Avellan (producer). It is shot, edited and partly scored by Rodriguez.
It is followed by Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014).
