The bitter-sweet 2023 Argentina film Since The Last Time We Met is a success, as an agreeable, handsome and stylish romantic drama. It illustrates vividly what we all know: never look back, don’t try to rekindle an old flame, really don’t.
Patricio Arellano stars as handsome and stylish late-thirties Victor, who is reunited by a chance meeting in the street with his first love David (Esteban Recagno), 15 years on from the last time they met when David walked out on him. This reunion, reluctant on Victor’s part, revives their love, but they have to enjoy a clandestine love, as Victor finds himself sharing with David’s wife, enjoying the frequent weekends when she is away. The two men have lots of sex, which is a success, but when they talk, things get bumpy.
Writer/ director Matías De Leis Correa’s bitter-sweet 2023 Argentina film Since The Last Time We Met [Desde la última vez que nos vimos] is a success, as an agreeable, and, like its hero, handsome and stylish romantic drama. It illustrates vividly what we all know: never look back, don’t try to rekindle an old flame, really don’t.
Patricio Arellano and Esteban Recagno are very persuasive as the couple in question. If anyone could buck the trend it’s them. The subtle thing here is that, while they persuade you that you want them to be together, they also suggest all the reasons that it is just wrong-headed. Victor and David are made for each other, yet the two pieces don’t quite fit. It’s a puzzle. Matías De Leis Correa is going to steer us through the intricacies of the emotional maze with much multi-layered flair in this seductive film. It’s basically a two-hander, and a talkathon (interspersed with a little loving), but when the actors are good and the script is good, that’s just great.
