Director Howard Zieff’s 1972 this amusing and delightful, zany, darkly comic lowlife crime thriller stars James Caan as ex-con Dick Kanipsia, who chase after a stash of cash with a charming collection of crazies – a bandleader, his wife and a drifter.
W D Richter’s zestful and inventive screenplay takes a wry look at everyday American eccentrics and relishes their quirks.
Caan, Peter Boyle, Sally Kellerman, Louise Lasser, Allen Garfield, Richard B Schull and Alex Rocco are all seen at their super best in this deliciously offbeat début by director Zieff, who went on to Hearts of the West (1975), House Calls (1978) and Private Benjamin (1980).
Also in the cast are Seamon Glass, Wayne Storm, Diana Darrin, Stuart Nisbet, Edwina Gough, Al Dunlap, James Joseph, Virginia Sale, Alex Henteloff, Len Lesser and Garry Doodrow.
