Paul Verhoeven’s engrossing and often very stirring 1979 Netherlands World War Two epic drama Soldier of Orange [Soldaat van Oranje] [Survival Run] tells the tale of four university students growing up fast during the Nazi occupation of Holland.
The movie is packed with great performances, with a dashing, youthful Rutger Hauer shining out as the young aristocrat Erik Lanshof who becomes a hero of the resistance and Jeroen Krabbé impressing too as Guus LeJeune.
For a long time it held the record as Holland’s most successful movie.
The screenplay by Kees Holierhoek, Gerard Soeteman and Paul Verhoeven is based on the book by Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema.
Also in the cast are Susan Penhaligon, Edward Fox, Peter Faber, Derek de Lint, Eddy Habbema, Lex van Delden, Huib Rooymans, Dolf de Vries, Belinda Meuldijk, Rik de Gooyer, Paul Brandenburg, Reinhard Kolldehoff, Andrea Domburg and Guus Hermus.
