Director Michael Hoffman’s 1988 American coming-of-age comedy drama film Some Girls [Sisters] stars Patrick Dempsey, Jennifer Connelly, Sheila Kelley, Lance Edwards, Lila Kedrova, Florinda Balkan and André Gregory.
Patrick Dempsey (then fresh from The Woo Woo Kid) plays college kid Dempsey who arrives at the Quebec home of his girlfriend Gabi (Jennifer Connelly) for Christmas. She promptly tells his she doesn’t love him anymore, but he falls into bed with her two sisters Irenka (Sheila Kelley) and Simone (Ashley Greenfield), and in love with the whole dotty family.
Director Hoffman’s film could have been a boisterous sex romp, but is in fact a gentle, tender and wise comedy drama. The sisters’ snowbound Canadian gothic house and countryside look dazzlingly beautiful, the performances are sprightly and charming (Lila Kedrova and André Gregory hand in lovely turns as Granny and dad), and the quirky script weaves its way through tangled webs of emotions.
Robert Redford was executive producer.
