Director David Berry’s appealing 2017 coming of age musical drama film Something Like Summer is written by by Carlos Pedraza, based on the 2011 young adult novel by Jay Bell, the first instalment in the Something Like… book series.
It stars Grant Davis, Davi Santos, Ben Baur, Ajiona Alexus, and Jana Lee Hamblin.
Something Like Summer follows the bumpy ride of the secret relationship of Houston, Texas, high school sweethearts Ben Bentley and Tim Wyman.
Ben is an openly gay 17 year-old teen with not many friends, who suddenly becomes infatuated with Tim Wyman, a handsome, popular and apparently straight newcomer. Their love story begins when an apparent accident brings them together.
But Tim’s fear of exposure tears the couple apart, and Ben begins dating charming flight attendant Jace. However, years later, Tim reappears, now openly gay and intent on winning Ben back. And so Ben is torn between his affection for Tim and his commitment to Jace.
Something Like Summer is a lightweight musical romance, quite sweet and nicely done, most entertaining and enjoyable, tuneful too. It is a a nice gay-themed romcom, with a pleasant tone and a good heart. The likeable and appealing Grant Davis is excellent as Ben, both dramatically and vocally, and ideally cast Davi Santos as Tim, Ben Baur as Jace and Ajiona Alexus as Allison Cross are good too.
