Spare Time (1939) is a classic 15-minute documentary from ace British documentarian Humphrey Jennings on the theme of what the British workers get up to in their spare time.
The commentary is provided by the voice of Laurie Lee.
Music is performed by the Handel Male Voice Choir, the Steel, Peech and Tozer Phoenix Works Band and the Manchester Victorians Carnival Band.
Spare Time is directed by Humphrey Jennings, runs 15 minutes, is made by the GPO Film Unit, is written by Humphrey Jennings and Stewart McAllister, is shot in black and white by H E Fowle and is produced by Alberto Cavalcanti.
Spare Time is available on the BFI’s The Complete Humphrey Jennings Volume One: The First Days DVD and Blu-ray [1939].
