After helming the successful 1984 outing The Search for Spock, Leonard Nimoy stays in control as director for this enjoyably light-hearted fourth 1986 save-the-whale episode. It represents an endearing, useful change of pace for Admiral Kirk (William Shatner) and company, in which the crew of the starship USS Enterprise trek back to the present to save tomorrow’s planet Earth.
In a tour-de-force, Nimoy brings it off handsomely as actor playing Mr Spock of course, co-author of the story (with Harve Bennett) and director. And there’s an infectious mood as everyone appears to be enjoying themselves on screen, even if there might have been tensions off.
DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Walter Koenig, George Takei and Nichelle Nichols are of course also aboard the USS Enterprise. Also in the cast are Jane Wyatt, Catherine Hicks, Robin Curtis, Mark Lenard, John Schuck, Brock Peters, Robert Ellenstein, Michael Snyder, Michael Berryman, Mike Brislane, Jane Wiedlin and Vijay Armitraj.
This thoroughly enjoyable episode is the other candidate (after Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) for best movie of the original Star Trek series.
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) followed. Star Trek was successfully rebooted in 2009, with a sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, in 2013.
