‘Piquant situations, intriguing scenes, sinister plots and delicious humour make STORMY WEATHER (1935) an Entertainment Delight.’
Director Tom Walls’s 1935 British black and white farcical comedy Stormy Weather is based on an original screenplay by Ben Travers, and stars Tom Walls, Ralph Lynn, Robertson Hare and Yvonne Arnaud.
The Walls-Lynn-Hare Aldwych Farce gang rides again with this funny film written by Travers, writer of their London stage hits, about a businessman called Sir Duncan Cragg (Walls) who, with his henchmen Mr Raymond Penny (Lynn) and Mr Bullock (Hare), sets out to break a band of Chinatown blackmailers, led by a creepy Russian, Count Polotsky (Andrews Engelmann).
Farce fans will enjoy this exuberant Thirties British comedy thriller, which see the crew on fine, fast-paced form.
Stormy Weather is excellent of its vintage kind.
The screenplay and dialogue are by Ben Travers, based on his story. Though it is not based on one of his Aldwych Theatre stage farces, it features a number of actors who had appeared in Aldwych films.
Also in the cast are Norma Varden as Mrs Dulcie Bullock, Andrews Engelmann as Count Polotsky, Davy Burnaby as Merritt, Veronica Rose as Trixie Merritt, Stella Moya as Moya, Gordon James as Salt Jasper, Louis Bradfield as Lacey, Graham Moffatt as Office Boy, Fewlass Llewellyn as Pullman, and Peter Gawthorne as Police Inspector.
Stormy Weather is directed by Tom Walls, runs 74 minutes, is made by Gainsborough Pictures, is released by Gaumont British Distributors, is written by Ben Travers, is shot in black and white by Philip Tannura, produced by Michael Balcon, scored by Jack Beaver, and designed by Alex Vetchinsky.
It is shot at Gainsborough Studios, Islington, London.
