Only Klaus Maria Brandauer raises a real spark of interest in director Joe Roth’s superficial 1986 Rocky clone, Streets of Gold, based on a story by Dezso Magyar.
He plays Alek Neuman, a Russian Jewish ex-fighter immigrant who washes up in New York and coaches a couple of likely amateur boxer youngsters (Adrian Pasdar, Wesley Snipes) to box for the US team in the Olympics.
Streets of Gold is competently made and entirely tolerable, though, and there are several other good actors to watch in the cast.
Also in the cast are Angela Molina, John Mahoney, Elya Baskin, Rainbow Harvest, Dan O’Shea, Jaroslav Stremien, Adam Nathan, Michael Beach and Frank Patton.
Streets of Gold is directed by Joe Roth, runs 95 minutes, is made by Roundhouse, is released by 20th Century Fox, is written by Heywood Gould, Richard Price and Tom Cole, is shot by Arthur Albert, is produced by Joe Roth, Harry J Ufland and James G Robinson, is scored by Jack Nitzsche and is designed by Marcos Flaksman.
