Director George B Seitz’s entertaining 1940 ninth film in the MGM comedy series, Andy Hardy Meets Debutante, finds Andy Hardy (Mickey Rooney) is still chasing pretty MGM starlets. Hooray for Judy Garland in a charismatic pairing with Mickey, as Andy’s old friend, Betsy Booth.
Lewis Stone also stars as Judge Hardy, who takes his family to New York City, where Andy becomes infatuated with a well-known young socialite, Daphne Fowler (Diana Lewis), from New York City even though he hasn’t met her yet.
Also in the cast are Fay Holden as Mrs Hardy, Cecilia Parker as Marian Hardy, Sara Haden as Aunt Milly, Ann Rutherford, Tom Neal, George Breakston, Cy Kendall and Addison Richards.
Andy Hardy Meets Debutante was very profitable: on a cost of $436,000 it earned $2,623,000, making MGM a profit of $1,409,000.
Garland played Betsy in two other Andy Hardy movies, Love Finds Andy Hardy (1938) and Life Begins for Andy Hardy (1941).
