Manu and Felipe are boys in the band, but their unbreakable bond is put it to test when Manu tells Felipe he loves him, in the sweet Argentinian 2022 coming out/ coming of age drama film Sublime.
Argentinian writer-director Mariano Biasin’s sweet 2022 coming out/ coming of age drama film Sublime focuses on inseparable teenage friends Manu (Martín Miller) and Felipe (Teo Inama Chiabrando), who hang out together and play in a band with their best friends. They have a lot of fun together, and life is good.
Both have girlfriends, but Felipe is quite a lot keener and more organised, with a van kitted out and lit up for love making, and Manu, er, a bit tentative and uncommitted in first sexual experience with a girl. Manu is dating the nice Azul (Azul Mazzeo), exploring their relationship, kind of leading her on and confusing her.
[Spoiler alert] But Manu’s daydreams point to his true feelings for Felipe, and eventually his disclosure of his love to Felipe, first to Azul, then, encouraged by her, to Felipe. This leads to a possibility that the lads aren’t inseparable after all.
Sublime is simple but direct, honest and appealing. The story is a realistic, charming heart warmer, the music performing is enthusiastic fun, and the natural performances are attractive and believable. Biasin handles it smoothly and expertly, keeping it low key, credible and naturalistic. We want everything to work out for these kids – and it does!
Sublime is released on 6 February 2023 on digital platforms.
It premiered in Germany on February 12, 2022 at the Berlin International Film Festival, and then screened in the United Kingdom on March 22, 2022 at the BFI Flare London LGBTQ+ Film Festival.
